Muon Flux Data from St. Croix, U.S.V.I. During the First 3 Days of January 2015

Compared with the Planetary K- index data for the same time period and with the average muon flux for periods of three days in July, September, and December 2014.

The coincidence detector was placed in the normal up-down, 180 degrees position and monitored during the indicated time.  All of the graphs refer to the same 3 days of data collection and show regression lines.  The graphs show the elapsed time in hours on the horizontal axis and the µR/hr  (micro-roentgen/hour) on the vertical axis. The start time was 12 AM AST on January 1, 2015 and the end time was 12 midnight  AST on January 3, 2015.The average value for the 3 day period was 1.11 µR/hr. There seems to be some correlation with the Planetary K- index data for the same time period. The graph of the the Planetary K-index is given at the end of this page. It includes the time period on St. Croix but is given in GMT. 12 AM AST on St. Croix is equivalent to 4 AM GMT.

The average muon flux for January 2015, 3-Day period is 1.11 µR/hr.  The average muon flux data for three other 3-day duration muon flux data measurements on St. Croix are:

Starting at 7/20/14 = 1.24 µR/hr             Starting at 9/11/14 = 1.24 µR/hr             Starting at 12/22/14 = 1.09 µR/hr

The average rates are higher for the the July and September 2014 periods compared to the December 2014 and January 2015 periods. This could be due to an increase in solar activity during July and September 2014.

kindex

The above graph shows the Planetary K- index data for the time period that includes the span of the 3 Day Muon Flux Data starting at 12 AM on 010115 at St. Croix, VI. The first bar for January 1 was the period of 8 PM to 12 PM AST on 12/31/14 on St. Croix. A bar was added (with the correct value) on  January 4 to accomodate the 8 PM to 12 PM time period of 01/03/15 on St. Croix. The data is from NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) and is considered public information.  More information can be found about the Planetary K-index at the NWS Space Prediction Center at http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/
